Rabbit (Rabbit)

Site Specific Stone Carving

-

During a week-long visit to Portland in Dorset I created a type based sculpture regarding the island's superstition of the word 'Rabbit'. These animals are thought to create unstable and dangerous conditions for quarrymen and therefore are deemed bad luck.

The piece investigates the juxtaposition between good and bad luck, in Portland the word is a major taboo, however in many parts of the UK rabbits are connected to good fortune, particularly the phrase 'Rabbit Rabbit'.

The two individual stones are deemed as offensive when seen alone within the context of the island, however signify good luck when viewed in tandem.
